ANTHR-140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Microevolution, Gene Flow, Meiosis
Document Summary
Non-mendelian traits: skin color: eye color and skin color are polygenic, non-mendelian, the environment plays a major role in regulating the expression of many phenotypes. Those individuals most suited to the environment will have a greater chance of surviving the struggle for existence. These characteristics will be passed on through generations. Certain traits are inherited through the transmission of alleles from each parent. Combined: population genetics, organismal biology, paleontology, theory of evolution by natural selection. Defined evolution in terms of genetics: a change in allele frequency in a given population over time. This has been the dominant paradigm in evolutionary theory for nearly 100 years. The knowledge of genetics and heredity demonstrated that evolution is not always directed by selection evolution can occur through random (non- directional) changes in allele frequency. Allele frequency: the frequency is the proportion of the total alleles in that population.
