In reality, an organism has limited resources available during its life, and different evolutionary success under ideal circumstances species allocate their resources (e. g. , energy) in different ways to maximize success. The gestation period for mice is only 20 days (fertilization to birth!) Baby mice require parental care for only three weeks. Mice can begin sexual reproduction at age 6 weeks. The gestation period for elephants is 22 months. Baby elephants require parental care for 5-10 years. Elephants usually begin sexual reproduction around 18-20 years. They usually only have one offspring at a time, and on average only six. Primate life histories total offspring in a lifetime. Compared to other mammals, primates have (a) longer lifespans (b) greater age of maturity and (c) live long, slow lives.
