What is Macroevolution? (Module 21)
Macroevolution is what happens when years and years of microevolution are
added together.
It is a long-term process and includes the origin and extinction of species and
larger taxonomic groups.
Microevolution occurs at the population level. As a population evolves over time,
it may become so different from other populations of the same species that it is no
longer considered to be part of the species
When a new species forms, it is called speciation event. It occurs when species
split or branches into 2 or more species that evolve independently of each other.
Linnean classification:
Speciation is the formation of new species.
If the two groups are separated geographically and cannot have gene flow
between them, this can cause speciation.
Phylogenetics: Building a Tree of Life
Homologous features are shared features that were inherited from the same
source and reflect common ancestry.
2 species that are closely related share many homologous features.
Fossil record is the total number of fossils that have been discovered and the
information that has been derived from them.

In a cladogram, inheritance proceeds from the bottom to the top of the diagonal
line
Organisms at the tips of the branches are living species and the lines joining them
show lines of descent
At points where lines meet are common ancestors
After these points, lines diverge as lineages evolve independently of each other.
Ecology
Populations, Communities, and Ecosystems (Module 22)
Ecology is the study of how organisms relate to one another and to their
environment.
Within an area defined by an ecologist, individuals of a single species that
live together and may breed with each other make up a population.
All of the different populations of living organisms living within an area
make up an ecological community.
