Gene flow can occur between distinct species (i. e. grolar bears) The biological species concept relies on the fact that species are designated by the absence of gene flow but there are many pairs of species that are morphologically and ecologically distant and yet gene flow occurs between them. Describe and provide examples of prezygotic and postzygotic reproductive barriers. Reproductive isolation can be classified by whether factors act before or after fertilization. A reproductive barrier that impedes mating between species or hinders fertilization if interspecific mating is attempted. Impeding members of different species from attempting to mate. Preventing an attempted mating from being completed successfully. Hindering fertilization if mating is completed successfully. Two species that occupy different habitats within the same area may encounter each other rarely even though they are not isolated by obvious physical barriers such as mountain ranges.
