Reading Longitude and Latitude
Latitude and Longitude are read in a series of Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds. If you were
given a map like the following, you will look at how many Longitude degrees followed by
the latitude degrees.
Longitude = 450W If we look at this map, you can eyeball it and see that the longitude is
half between 0 and 30 degrees.
Latitude = 150N if we look at the map, you can eyeball it and see it is half way between
90 west and 0 degrees.
Thus the Location is at 450W 150W
For more detailed maps, you can provide minutes and seconds. This is done when you are
looking at a coordinate smaller than a degree. There are 60 minutes to a degree and 60
seconds to a minute.
Time Zones
There are 360 degrees and 24 hours, therefore each hour is worth (360/24 degrees) = 150
per hour for time zones. However, due to political influence, countries may not follow this
and choose to be a part of another time zone.
Types of Maps
1. Dot maps: shows spatial dispersion, more dots means more of one character.
2. Choropleth maps: Shows a continuum of colors that show graduated variations in
data.
3. Isopleth maps: connects locations of equal data.
4. Cartograms: Distorts space to emphasize specific data.
Geography of religion
Religion: A set of beliefs(and associated activities) that facilitates an appreciation and
understanding of our place in the world and acts to unify all those that believe into a single
community
