Cultural Geography
Geog-130
Region: A part of the earths surface that displays internal homogeneity and is relatively
distinct from surrounding areas according to some criterion or criteria; Regions are
intellectual creations
Physical (Land, Climate, precipitation)
Human ( Language, region, culture)
Regionalization: The process where we simplify our complex world and its human and
physical geogrphaic patterns and process into regions
Earths surfaces are assigned/classified into various regions based on criteria
Regions are classified by landscape, visible features
Landscapes can be natural/physical and human/cultural
Cultural Landscapes: The outcome of interactions between people and their
environments; the use of human imprint on the land
Each cultural group imprints itself on the landscape in different ways
Many Cultures=Many distinct cultural landscapes
Southern Ontario
• -Rural areas
• -Urban/Suburban areas
Concepts: Landscape
Diffusion: The movement/spread of a geographic phenomenon across space and over
time
• Spread of new iPhone
Two main forms of diffusion
• Relocation Diffusion: Spread of ideas, cultural characteristics etc from one area to
another via physical movement o Technology o Immigrants o Disease
