Globally, urban population exceeded rural population for the first time (2008) What percent of you live in urbanized areas? (a city or subrurb) vs rural areas. How many of us produce any of our own food: significant cultural/social shift: urban society. What are the key factors: population, occupations, types of buildings, access to services, bus routes. Is a city really just a large(or very large) town or in othe words. Or is there something truly different about cities. Centres of large, diverse, and densely concentrated populations. Centres of concentrations of power and economic activity. Centres of cultural change(education, social heterogeneity etc) Places which reflect social, economic and political diversity. Okay, maybe we can see a difference between cities. City: relatively permanent and highly organized centre of population, of greater size or important than a town or village. Turkey, egypt, india-pakistan, china and later europe & central america.
