PSYCH-190 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Informed Consent, Dendrite
Document Summary
The code of ethics requires psychologists to show respect for people, for animals, and for the truth. The research should show respect for persons and their right to make decisions for and about themselves without undue influence or coercion. Research should be beneficent, which means that it should attempt to maximize benefits and reduce risks to the participant. Research should be just, which means it should distribute benefits and risks equally to participants without prejudice toward particular individuals or groups. All procedures involving animals must be done under the supervision of a trained psychologist. Psychologists must make reasonable efforts to minimize discomfort, infection, illness, and pain of animals. Psychologists may use a procedure that subjects animals to pain, stress, or privation only when the alternative method is unavailable. Psychologists must perform all surgical procedures under appropriate anesthesia and minimalize all pain after and during a surgery.
