Gradual physical decline begins early in adulthood and has clear psychological consequences, some of which are offset by increases in skill and expertise. People experience a small decrease in positive affect beginning around 55, but this is more than compensated for by the large decrease in negative affect that begins around the age of 15 and continues through middle age. A positive or negative experience that is associated with a particular pattern of physiological activity. Cognitive appraisal--how we think about a situation can affect our emotional response. Alters thought processes--it changes the way we think about the world; directs our attention.
