The brain and spinal cord are one organ. Adult spinal cord is shorter than the spine because grows faster than your body. Spinal cord stops growing while body still grows. Newborn fontanels/soft spots are where diffusion is not complete yet and leaves separations between bones in brains. Foramen magnum: whole in the bottom of the skull for the connection of spinal chord; other functional openings for other connections made with brain. Anatomical directions used to navigate 3d nervous system. Medial close to midline; lateral away from midline. Ipsilateral structures are on the same side of the midline: something on the same side of something, left arm is ipsilateral to the left hemisphere. Contralateral structures are on opposite sides of the midline. Something on the opposite side of something. Left arm is contralateral to the right hemisphere.
