Document Summary
Characteristics and traits of how people act. 1937, gordon allport: personality: a psychological interpretation -- started the field of personality psychology when he wrote this. Some of the theories we will talk about predate this but they are theories of personality (just don"t say they are) Field of personality psych looks at 3 major areas: Human universals (what are the characteristics of being human--across all humans--how are we all alike) Individual differences (how are we all different) Uniqueness of the individual (how can we possibly explain the personality of each unique individual scientifically) Theory building : author evaluates theories based on these 5 things. Scientific observation- important to study large and diverse samples, be objective, to get accurate observations, to use quality tools of some sort, and to reduce bias. Systematic- relates all aspects of theory in a system or a way that makes sense and is organized. Testable- difficult thing to do in psychology bc thoughts are not observable.
