Very different from society"s view at the time (society believed that humans were born good and were corrupted by society) His view is that we are born a teeming mass of urges, and it is society"s responsibility to control those urges. Structure of the mind - used this to explain how our minds work through development. Psychosexual stages - personality was set in stone by adolescence which is why the stages only go this far. Video: about freud"s early life; jewish, had a weird family, favored child, studied obsessively, went to med school, had an intense love affair through letters. Bruke: biology in a place of vitalism at the time (gave the body its life/energy). Freud: states of excitation in the body (instincts or drives) are source of psychic energy. instincts/drives: seek expression tension reduction. Life instinct: libido sex drive, drive to preserve the organism and reproduction.
