PSYCH-230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Psychosexual Development, Psych
Document Summary
Psychopathology results from unconscious conflicts in the individual. Conscious preconscious (ego) unconscious (superego, id) Child learns to responds to the demands of society. Child learns to realize the differences between male and female and becomes aware of sexuality. Child continues their development but sexual urges are quiet. The growing of adolescent shakes off old dependencies and learns to deal maturely with the opposite sex. Freud believed that too little or too much gratification at a particular stage of psychosexual development can lead to fixation resulting in personality traits associated with that stage. Mental health is a function of the dynamic balance among the psychic structures of id, ego, and superego. Underlying conflicts that give rise to psychological disorders originate in childhood and are buried in the depths of the unconscious. Theories based on anecdotes during therapy sessions are not grounded in objectivity, thus not scientific. People use defense mechanisms to control anxiety and stress.
