Document Summary

The biological compounds (proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, etc. , which are studied in the following pages) are integrated into nature at a number of increasingly complex levels of organization: cell. Tissue - organ - organ system - individual - population - community - ecosystem. Cell (cell level): is the smallest and simplest functional biological unit. 1 protoplasm, limited by a plasma membrane (of lipids and pro-theins), reinforced in plants by a cell wall. Examples of cells are: neuron, muscle fiber, osteocyte, unicellular gland. Tissue (tissue level): set of morphologically and physiologically similar cells that associate to fulfill a certain function. Tissues: muscular, nervous, bone, conjunctive, epithelial, are some of the examples. Organ (organic level): formed by a set of tissues that are related to fulfill a certain function. Ex: nervous tissue forms organs such as the cerebellum, cerebellum, spinal cord, etc.
