The 18th century is the great century of lights, the century of the enlightenment as this pan- 18th century is usually called si cle philosophique) and intellectuals, but gradually entire societies in such a way that it has become the feeling of "modern" life par excellence. The importance of this integral and pan-european movement for today cannot be underestimated; we still recognize today the fruits of the enlightenment, but also its shadows and deficiencies. The enlightenment is a multifaceted phenomenon, which is present in all fields of society; it has its impact on science, art, literature, religion, politics and morality. Enlightenment are the french revolution (1791), the american declaration of human rights (1976) and the emergence of countless scientific societies and discussion circles. Politically speaking, the enlightenment was a whole movement of the middle class (bourgeoisie) to claim their rights and freedoms against the ancient regime of absolute monarchy.
