PSY 433 Lecture Notes - Lecture 35: Racemic Mixture, Impulsivity, Psychopharmacology
Document Summary
Drug treatment, despite having so many detractors, is now the first choice in adhd treatment. There are numerous investigations that have shown their superiority over other interventions, whichdoes not mean that they are not taken into account. Pharmacological treatment, especially psychostimulants, are effective in both hyperactivity and improving the cognitive aspectsinvolved in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd) such as attention deficit, improved executive functions, working memory and impulsivity. Its effectiveness has, i think, resulted in an overvaluation ofit and, in some cases, some abuse in the prescription, from which some responsibility of the pharmaceutical industry and its aggressive marketing is not exempt. On the other hand, we still have an underdiagnosis of adhd, which gives thechild who could benefit from it, they are not being treated. The mechanism of action of effective adhd drugs works by increasing the availability of dopamine and/or norepinephrine in the intersynopatic space.
