Document Summary

Respiratory system: nose, nasal cavity, pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box), trachea (windpide), bronchi, lungs. Upper respiratory = nose, nasal cavity, pharynx + associated structures. Conducting zone: nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, terminal bronchioles. Filter, warm, moisten and conduct air to lungs. Respiratory zone: respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs, alveoli. Site of gas exchange between air and blood. Area from which nerve impulses are sent to respiratory muscles. Consists of clusters of neurons located bilaterally in medulla oblongata + pons. When active => breathing rate more rapid. Chemoreceptors in medulla oblongata monitor levels of co2, o2, h. Pns also sensitive to changes of these levels in blood. We can alter our breathing because cerebral cortex has connections w/ respiratory. Nerve impulses from hypothalamus + limbic system also stimulate respiratory center center. Cartilaginous framework of the external nose = hyaline cartilage connected to. Unpaired septal nasal cartilage forms anterior portion of nasal septum.
