Document Summary

Brain consumes ~ 20% of the oxygen and glucose used by the body. Drain into internal jugular veins to return blood from head to heart. Neurons synthesize atp almost exclusively from glucose via oxidative reactions. No glucose is stored in brain supply of glucose to brain must be constant. Can be a problem for diabetics (low glucose levels) When activity of neurons + neuroglia increase => increased flow of blood to that region of brain. Astrocytes total oxygen deprivation > 4 min = permanent injury. Tight junctions seal endothelial cells of brain blood capillaries type of neuroglia. Processes of astrocytes press against blood capillaries in brain secrete chemicals that maintain permeability of tight junctions. + thick basement membrane that surrounds capillaries. H2o soluble substances cross bbb by active transport. Creatinine, urea, ions cross bbb very slowly. Proteins + antibiotic drugs do not cross bbb. Bbb almost too effective can prevent the passage of helpful substances.
