BIOLOGY 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 32: East Los Angeles College, Gamma Globulin, Antibody
Document Summary
Thucydides wrote in his history of the peloponnesian war that persons who had been exposed to plague previously could care for the sick without danger. Work during the time of disease taken after getting infected. Preventative method, taken before getting infected taken once and has permanent effect. Viruses mutate and evolve at rates that are orders of magnitude greater than eukaryotes or even prokaryotes. Bird flu and other forms of the influenza virus have a high rate of mutation due to the fact that they are typically passaged between humans, fowl, and pigs. Vaccines work by activating the natural immune system but in such a way that it does not make the person sick. Adaptive (active) immunity- production of a person"s own antibodies. Natural active- when pathogen enters body in the normal way, we make antibodies. Artificial active- vaccination usually contains a safe antigen from the pathogen. Innate (passive) immunity- an individual is given antibodies by another.
