CH DEV 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: East Los Angeles College, Circadian Rhythm, Swaddling
Document Summary
Newborns to 1 month old infant"s states of arousal. Most sleep comes at night (like the mother) Wakefulness dictated by hunger vs. light least amount of time in quiet alertness. Highlights of states of arousal in older infants/children. Few months old: follow more of a circadian rhythm (24 hour schedule) 18 month old: take 1 nap a day. Between 3-5 years old: child drops the nap. Bidirectional relationships: colic baby screamed a lot, difficult being in high distress. Waking activity and crying terrible ear infection. Proximal care = being close to the baby, cries less is what study shows, babies have different personalities, watching and observing before the child cries. Research video: still face experiment- with no reaction feels distress and cries. Good- normal stuff, bad- something bad happens, ugly- don"t give the child any chance to get back to good. Mothers who experience post pardon expression, not responding to the infant"s wants- later impacts child development.
