Document Summary

For many young western women, looking good is more important than being healthy. Glorification of slenderness- more females are thinner than average american women. Overweight men are 2-5 times more common on television characters than overweight women, the message from the media to be thin is clearly aimed at women. These standards are increasingly difficult to achieve because the size and weight of the average women has increased over the years with improved nutrition. Women however rated their current figures as much heavier than what they judged the most attractive, which in turn, was rated as heavier than what they thought was ideal. This conflict between reality and fashion seems most closely related to the current epidemic of eating disorders* Men would prefer a body heavier and more muscular then they currently are, and think women would also prefer this. Dieting increases the risk of an eating disorder (especially at a young age)
