Discussion Questions
Greater spending on healthcare has improved health. We could reduce spending on
healthcare without harming health. Can both be true at the same time? Why?
In the US, as we have spent more and more on healthcare, outcomes have
improved (people are living longer, disability rates are lower)
The US spends more on healthcare than any other country, but our outcomes are
better than a lot of other countries
If you spend more money on healthcare you can get more advanced treatments for
health issues BUT We overspend money because we overuse really expensive
technologies and procedures
o Advances in technology and medicine are great when they're used properly
Regulating physician salaries: US physician salaries are much higher than other
countries, people are paying more for their healthcare
Example: breast cancer patients are surviving longer than they used to. As new
technologies and treatments have come out, people are surviving longer by significant
percentages.
Example: babies born between 1000-1499 grams in 1960 68% had major medical issues,
in 1990 only 26% did, extra $56000 dollars in cost, but outcomes have improved.
Meanwhile babies greater than 1500 grams are having the same amount of problems
(1990 rate same as 1960 rate), and we're still spending $11000 more dollars (more
spending but NO OUTCOME)
In reference to diagram to the right:
Spending Curve
Technology causes this curve to shift up. But more so the right (meaning spending more
money for a only little bit more health)
Here we sit, having a discussion about whether we spend too much on medical care. I
bet there is so other class having a similar discussion about spending on computers,
travel, sports, beauty products, etc. Why? What is different or unique about
healthcare?
Healthcare Is essential, and healthcare is a right
o Basic things should be a right
We are paying for those other things out of pocket, with healthcare we're not
generally not paying for things with out own money - they government is paying
for a lot of this, so it should be discussed
Doctors are paid more for doing more services
