Protective tariff: tax on imported goods used to increase appeal of domestic goods. 1832: south carolina government blocked the "tariff of abominations. Early 1833: jackson pushed congress to pass this bill which gave authorization to invade south carolina with the army and enforce tax payments. Even among those most opposed to slavery, few were willing to support racial equality. These supporters denounced the kansas-nebraska act as conclusive evidence that the south, no increasingly referred to as the "slave power," was bent on spreading the curse of slavery wherever possible.
