The majority of the population supports the death penalty. In 1988: 81% of republicans and 63% of democrats favored the death penalty. In 2008: 84% of republicans and 54% of democrats favored the death penalty. Goelzhauser (2012) investigates whether there is a relationship between capital punishment conviction rates and judicial elections. Finds that states in which judges are elected have more capital punishment convictions than states without judicial elections. They work for the public, and the public, or principal, has ways of influen(cid:272)ing the agent"s (cid:271)eha(cid:448)ior. Some think that firearms increase the number of homicides for the simple reason that they make it easier to kill. If more people had guns, people would think twice before harming someone else. Imposes stricter restrictions on who can buy a handgun. Ludwig and cook (2000) show that the brady act did not impact homicide. Lud(cid:449)ig and cook"s data only analyzes the effe(cid:272)t of legal handgun purchases, but not ownership, making estimation difficult rates.
