PSB-2000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Endoplasmic Reticulum, Basic Block, Ion Channel
Document Summary
The cell is the basic block of life. Each cell is capable of surviving on its own. Prokaryoic cells are bacteria that have very simple genomes and can live in any environment. An example of an organelle is a nucleus. The dna has to be bound up because it"s so long. The mitochondrion is capable of taking the oxygen your breathing in to break it down into sugar and uses energy to power the cell. Endoplasmic reiculum is responsible for synthesizing and transporing proteins. A protein is the workforce of a cell. A protein is a string of amino acids. Essenial amino acids is an amino acids that you need to digest in your diet because they are the basic unit of proteins. In order to get a message from one cell to another it has to get across the cell membrane. Neuron is a cell that has a chemical electricity.
