Florence was a republic but was unstable. Tall tower used to hide and fire arrows. So it was good to have high tower to see everything. Florence built on sight of roman military base. Called old palace bc medici were most important bankers in europe. Florence became capital of grand duchy of tuscany. But it was so eye-catching that it remained on ground at eye-level. Red roof tiles of florence buildings keeps heat out of house. Madonna of the holy trinity (madonna and child) This depicts mary as byzantine holy queen. 3d space started to be experimented with. Most important artist in late medieval italy. Throne behind mary is in gothic style. Arena chapel: north wall: lamentation over the dead christ (1305) by giotto. Lamentation bc lots of people are thrown into one painting. Fresco bc water colors are painted on plaster wall.
