ANTHR 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Uncanny Valley, Cultural Anthropology
Document Summary
S. f: making something fiction a depiction of reality and also introducing new ideas. The uncanny valley: the robots that are so different yet so close to us. Freud saw a reflection of himself on a train window and realized how uncanny he is to himself. This is what something really familiar to us looks so strange. That hand thing: he is doing this thing with his hands and cannot stop doing it, he is on auto pilot mode in a way. However, this puppet is also doing the same thing and he does it better than the human. But the puppet is dying slowly which is something that is attributed to humans but not puppets. The human is left doing something he learned from the puppet. This is why you are confused whether to which one of them is the actual human in the video. Juxtaposing something uncanny with something that is familiar to us.
