The earth is about 150 million km from the sun at any given point. Closest to the sun during the perihelion on january 3rd when its 147 million km. Farthest during the aphelion on july 4th when its 152 million km. Plane of the ecliptic: the plane on which the earth revolves around the sun. The earth is tilted on it"s axis relative to this plane.
