GEOG 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Intertropical Convergence Zone, Weather Vane, Coriolis Force
Document Summary
Geog 111 - lectures seven and eight - 9/14 + 9/16. Wind has enormous potential to shape the landscape. Mercury barometer: looks like a thermometer the amount of mercury changes in response to the pressure. Aneroid barometer: more used in meteorology and the like, records continuous air pressure to look at change over time. Wind speed measured with an anemometer, direction with a wind vane. Global winds have distinct zones that are named for the direction from which they originate. Wind causes waves due to the frictional drag on the surface of the ocean so wave patterns can be used to track wind patterns. Pressure gradient is the tendency of air to flow from high pressure to low pressure. Isobars are used to talk about regions with the same barometric pressure on a map, unit of measurement millibars. On a map the closer the isobars are placed the steeper the pressure gradient and the higher the winds.
