Document Summary

Geog 111 - lectures nine and ten - 9/21 + 9/23. Nurdles: small plastic beads that are a pre-manufactured state that can be easily blown around and moved about the ocean. Microbeads: same thing even smaller, found in face washes and toothpaste, outlawed last year in the us. System: gyre, input - trash, positive feedback - consumerism. Gyrosphere in ocean is essentially a system in which insolation goes in and heat is eventually released. Thermohaline circulation: an enormous system of flowing deeper water colder currents and shallower warmer currents of rising and sinking currents due to differing densities like salt and temperature that creates a sort of conveyor belt. There is a concern that melting ice due to climate change would affect this current, and eventually creating a cooling effect. Enso: el nino/ southern oscillation, a pacific ocean phenomenon that affects the whole world, warm water rises, no fish, every 3-5 years.
