One group of mental processes is separated from the rest. Can be a normal,even adaptive in response to acute stress. Feeling that the exterior world is unreal. Evaluating one"s relationship with or thoughts about the world. At least half of all adults have had at least 1 episode. Inability to remember significant autobiographical info or events. Localized/circumscribed: no recall for events that happened within a particular time frame. Selective: certain portions of time period/specific aspects of event have been forgotten. Generalized: all of the experiences during entire lifetime have been forgotten. Continuous: forgets all events from a given time to the present. Systematized: forgotten classes of info, such as relating to family/work. Other disorders and causes have been ruled out. Duration of amnesia can range widely from minutes to years. Usually ends abruptly with full recovery of lost memory. Often a brief episode of travel lasting a few hours to days. Recovery is usually sudden with subsequent amnesia of episode.
