The lowest court in federal judicial system is us district court. Us court of appeals doesn"t have original jurisdiction, only district or supreme court. Issues like federal law (copyright) would fall under federal jurisdiction. Marbury v. madison severely weakened the deferral judiciary. Can start at federal court or state court, then supreme court review around 8,000 cases. Petitions for certiorari: a request for the supreme court to review your case. Conference: 9 justices go to formula process, the chief gets to go first and set the agenda, everyone gets to vote, there is no court reporter or anyone else, it"s secret. Rule of four: a petition for certiorari will be granted and the case in question reviewed if four of the nine justices so decide. Factors in case selection: justiciability idea that something court can handle, it"s appropriate for the court.
