Coping strategies: actions that people can take to master, tolerate, reduce or minimize the effects of stressors, and they can include both behavioural strategies and psychological strategies. Problem focused coping: try to eliminate the source of a stress or reduce its impact through their own actions. Emotion focused coping: strategy that involves changing the way a person feels or emotionally reacts to a stressor; reduces the emotional impact of the stressor and makes it possible to deal with the problem more effectively. Using humor: can be a form of emotion focused coping. Meditation and relaxation as a coping mechanism: Meditation: series of mental exercises meant to refocus attention and achieve a trancelike state of consciousness. Concentrative meditation: goal is to focus the mind on some repetitive or unchanging stimulus (a spot or sound of one"s heart) Visualization: use the imagination to go to a calm, peaceful place or situation, using as many of your senses as you can (guided imagery)
