PSY E111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Depth Perception, Psy, Muscle Contraction
Document Summary
Some people think it is not an innate ability. Another way in which we understand our world. Depth perception: how we see our world in 3 dimensions and accurately judge distance. Joseph campos conducted what we call a visual cliff experiment. The plexiglass is made so that the baby can"t see his or her reflection. The bigger checkered pattern seems to be closer to the ground, so visually. In the first part of the experiment, they took a bunch of 6-month year old crawlers. So, they put the baby where the checkered background is at the top (shallow side), and we put mom or dad at the bottom side (deep side). 90% of the babies would not cross over to the deep side. This tells us that these babies are capable of judging depth and that they are afraid of heights, but it doesn"t tell us whether it is inert or not.
