ANTH 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Eurasianism, Stereopsis, Southeast Asia
Document Summary
Miocene (23 - 5 mya) - true hominoids first appear. Only found in africa, which at this time was a detached continent. At this time, ocean currents surrounded the continent and helped to create a sub-tropical climate with lush greenery. Had no tail, larger body size, larger brain, complete stereoscopic vision. Climate begins to dry out, becomes less tropical, fewer trees. Apes begin to leave africa, migrating throughout the old world. The middle miocene represents the heyday of the apes. There were many more apes alive then, verses today. Apes of southeast asia - sivapithecus - large bodied. We can project a potential evolutionary connectedness to a living primate today - orangutan (due to nearly identical dental characteristics) Animals are beginning to be forced to the ground more often due to dwindling tree cover. Two major lines survive, one leading to modern hominoids. Climate is more arid, trees occur in much fewer numbers.
