Document Summary

The fate of the apes: conservation priorities and prospects in the 21st century. It"s hard to get census numbers on great apes. We don"t really know how many bonobos, but we guess about 10-15,000. About 10,000 orangutans, they"re in indonesia which is industrializing. Conflict minerals: columbite-tantalite (coltan) (used in cell phones) leads to civil wars and is located in regions where gorillas are. Bushmeat (in africa where it is desperately poor, they eat any animal they can get their hands on and they smoke them and eat them). The problem today is that it is an industry and not just a thing to get some food on the table. Logging trucks are a new problem because they go in for wood and come out with bushmeat as well. Disease transmission (apes catch essentially every disease that we do and have no immunity). A scary example is ebola, because there have been recent epidemics where thousands of apes have died.
