Divided into incisors (8), canines (4), premolars (8) & molars (12: oral cavity: inside teeth & gums. Roof formed by the hard and soft palates. Floor formed by tongue, mucosa & underlying muscles. Deglutition (shifting food during chewing and bolus formation) taste (has numerous taste receptors associated with papillae) speech (eg. dentals t and d and nasals n ) Acts to moisten the oral cavity & vestibule for: lubricating food to assist in swallowing: providing a fluid seal for sucking & suckling, aiding taste receptors by acting as a aqueous solvent, aiding speech. Secretes antibacterial & digestive agents (eg. amylase) Consists of minor mucosal/submucosal & major salivary glands.
