SOC 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: George Herbert Mead, W. E. B. Du Bois, Symbolic Interactionism
Document Summary
Karl marx (1818-1883) saw class struggle as inevitable as long as capitalists are exploiting workers. Believed that sociologists (and students) should study praxis, which means putting theory into action. Believed in social change and activism thought capitalism was evil and would eventually be overthrown. W. e. b dubois (1868-1963) was an early black sociologist. Did research with the hope that he could help establish a racially egalitarian society. Believed that knowledge was important in combating prejudice. Key points this perspective is microsociology, meaning that it doesn"t study large groups, institutions, or societal-wide trends instead, studies individuals and small groups. Humans live in a world of meaningful objects, and attach meanings to objects and symbols. George herbert mead (1863) founded this paradigm. Focus on small group interaction and face-to-face encounters. Erving goffman (1922-1982) believed that the world is a stage and we are all actors! Dramaturgical approach- we present ourselves according to an image that we want to achieve.
