PSY-P 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Childhood Amnesia, Frontal Lobe, Lev Vygotsky
Document Summary
From 3-6 yrs the most rapid growth in frontal lobes enable rational planning. Preschoolers display a rapidly developing ability to control their attention and behavior. Brain"s association areas (linked with thinking, memory, and language) are the last cortical areas to develop. Sequence of physical (motor) development is universal. 25% of all babies walk by 11 months. 50% within a week of 1st birthday. Back to sleep position (babies sleep on backs) associated with crawling but not with walking. Identical twins typically begin walking on same day. Earliest conscious memories seldom predate our 3rd birthday. Brain areas underlying memory (hippocampus, frontal lobe) continue to mature into adolescence. Conscious mind does not know and cannot express in words, the nervous system and our 2-track mind somehow remember. Piaget: all mental activities associated with thinking, knowing, remembering, communicating. Brain develops through a series of stages. Our intellectual progression reflects an unceasing struggle to make sense of our experiences.
