Nigeria was colonized by britain; colonial administration worked with local chiefdoms in attempt to limit negative effects on local peoples. 1958: achebe writes things fall apart, which became an international sensation, in response to writings of white colonists about african culture that inaccurately depicted. Things fall apart is a more accurate depiction of pre-colonization life and traditions in nigeria. It presents dignified characters, but does not idealize the culture (it has elements of violence, sexism, etc. ). Wrote in english (said that in unified tribes that previously were unable to communicate because of multiple dialects; this decision to write in english was highly controversial).
