Document Summary

In-class notes on really cheap ways to measure what matters. Measuring police competence- current measures are based on how much crime there is (if you have less crime, you have competent officers and vice versa). Measuring police skill- currently measured by the use of force. The article points out that force is what separates policing from other jobs, but also states that a skilled officer should be able to minimize the use of force (diffuse situations instead of resorting to force). Measuring police integrity- policing involves a lot of discretion (provided the opportu(cid:374)it(cid:455) for (cid:373)is(cid:272)o(cid:374)du(cid:272)t(cid:895), a(cid:374)d a lot of poli(cid:272)i(cid:374)g is do(cid:374)"t i(cid:374) pri(cid:448)ate (cid:894)a(cid:449)a(cid:455) fro(cid:373) super(cid:448)isor; i(cid:374) fro(cid:374)t of (cid:862)u(cid:374)relia(cid:271)le(cid:863) (cid:449)itnesses). Competence, skill, and integrity are fundamental necessities to good policing, but are difficult to quantify/ measure.
