ACCTG 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 28: James Mill, Age Of Enlightenment, Neutral Monism
Document Summary
Organisitc/animistic = everything has feelings or is working toward a goal. Each of the 4 earthly elements has its natural place. 4 causes (explanations): material, formal, efficient and final. 3 souls: nutrient, sensitive and rational soul (mind) There is no gap between appearance and reality. Galileo, descartes: there is an immense gap between reality and appearance. Reality hides behind the appearances in the act of destroying they created the mind-body problem. Is independent of human beings: exists objectively, can be analyzed in smaller invisible elements, obeys deterministic laws. Subjective appearances: color, odor, taste, sound, tactile properties not part of the natural science as they are subjective + physics does not deal with the subjective. Skeptical method: philosophical questioning of everything to find basic truths (= undeniable facts) Laws of nature: not extended in space, not divisible, reason and language, not determined (free will) Interactionist dualism= mind can causally act on body (and vice versa) problem (e. g. bathtub)
