Islamic modernism: salafiyya movement sought to reconcile the islamic faith with modern values such as nationalism, democracy, civil rights and so forth. The muslim brotherhood: founded by hassan al-banna in egypt, 1928, believed that an islamic revival was key to the egyptian political reform. Argued that islam was compatible with the needs of modern society and developed popular education, welfare, land reform and labour policies: gained huge traction in the 19030s. al-banna was assassinated by the egyptian government in 1949. Sayyid outb: muslim brotherhood supported revolution in egypt in 1951. In 1954 an assassination attempt on nasser was blamed on the muslim brotherhood. Nasser"s regime persecuted and suppressed the brotherhood throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
