Document Summary

The westminster and consensus models of democracy. One of the most cited works in politics. Uk westminster model is quite close to majoritarian but not exactly like it. It"s been changing particularly after blair"s labour government especially devolution getting closer to consensus. Class is still main cleavage majoritarian model only has one other important ones in the uk e. g. centre-periphery (powerhouse of country vs. regions where national identities aren"t that clear. Spain); brexit perhaps (people involved in cleavages label themselves based on where they stand. Labour constitutional changes (1997-2010) conservatives (+ lib dem) later accepted almost all of the changes (though initially devolution was contrasted) Coalition government now power-sharing closer to consensus model. Scotland has its own political system (though is isn"t an independent country) Harder for smaller parties to win system easier to have two-party system (though usually not perfect)
