However, the league did not take off until march 1945, just before the end of the second world war. At that time the issues that dominated the league"s agenda were freeing those arab countries still under colonial rule and preventing the jewish community in palestine from creating a jewish state. The arab league was formed in cairo on 22 march 1945 with six members: egypt, iraq, transjordan (renamed jordan after 1946), lebanon, saudi arabia, and syria. Yemen joined as a member on 5 may 1945.
