Try to identify children"s cognitive capabilities at various points in development. Explain how more advanced understandings grow from more primitive ones. Greater emphasis on role of processing limitations, strategies of overcoming limitations, knowledge about specific content. More precise analysis of change (and contribution of ongoing cognitive activity to that change) Assumption that knowledge about how adults think helps understanding how children think. Focus on information that children represent: memory limits that constrain amount of information they can represent & process. Expansion of the amount of information they can process at one time. Change produced by process of continuous self-modification: outcomes generated by child"s own activities change the way it will think in the future. Children are active problem solvers (overcome obstacles to attain goals) Children"s thinking continuously changing at all stages cognitive growth occurs continuously, in small increments that occur at different times on different tasks.
