PHYSICS 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Pasteurella, William Farr, Epidemiological Method
Document Summary
Appreciate the role of epidemiology and quantitative methods in the study and control of diseases in populations. Understand the concepts of endemic stability, outbreak, epidemic and pandemic. Provide a basic description of the temporal and spatial patterns of disease in a population. Understand the concepts of multi-factorial disorder and web of causation. Epidemiology: the study of diseases in populations. Veterinary epidemiology: the study of diseases in animal populations more accurately, the study of diseases, productivity and welfare in animal populations. Through his observations, he managed to identify the main reasons why people were subjected to cholera and issued recommendations to control an outbreak. Unit 1: he plotted locations of cases and the locations of water wells. The map he created allowed for a pattern to be visualised, where he saw that cases were concentrated in areas to which water was being pumped from certain wells. He was able to compare the households sourcing their water from different places.
