Document Summary
General history: originated around the 1900"s, term coined by titchener, 1909. Still reffered to as a subjective, intangible hypothetical construct in 2009. Main theories: two main theoretical frameworks: theory theorists: the idea that we have the ability to desire intuitive theoires about others. So we look at others and form theories about them from our own cognitive abilities: simulation theory: our bodies simulate anothers" experiences, by imagining and inferring from our own experiences. Main phenomena and facts: there are 8 related, but distinct phenomena (batson, 2009) which include: identification, emotional contagion, true empathy, cognitive empathy, theory of mind and perspective taking. (sakurai, For some cognitive empathy (eslinger, 1998) and empathic accuracy theorists (iokes 1993), this is the overall concept of empathy itself. The basis is that you can guess exactly what"s in someone else"s head for a variety of experiences.
