Document Summary

He found that females prefer males with brightly colored plumage: females would prefer those feathers because they are a proxy of the quality of that males genes. The more tail feather eyespots on the father, the heavier (after day 84) the offspring. Tail spots also correlate positively to the percent survival of the chicks. Sexual selection: selection generated by differential access to opposite-sex gametes (or mates) Intersexual selection: when individuals of one sex select among individuals of the other sex as mates. Intra sexual selection: members of one sex, most often males, compete with each other for mating access to the other sex. Types of polygamy: polygyny- one male mates with more than one female, polyandry- one female mates with more than one male, polygynandry. Different selective processes operate on males and females. Anisogamy: different in the size of the gametes that forms the basis of the definition of males and females.
