BIOL 1201 Lecture : Lecture 11
Document Summary
Readings: pgs 112-122 in campbell biology 9th ed. Mastering biology: homework 9 (due wednesday before 10 am) Continue: cell cytoskeleton from lecture 10 study guide. 1. phospholipid bilayer with integral/ peripheral proteins (carbohydrates, steroids: membranes are dynamic fluid mosaic model, selective. Permeable- control the transport into and out of the cell. Membrane transport of h2o/solutes: diffusion passive transport of solute molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration, osmosis diffusion of water across a selective preamble membrane. Water molecules move from a low (hypotonic) to high (hypertonic) solute concentration. The rate of h2o movement depends on the difference in concentration. Hypotonic water will enter a cell faster that it leaves. Hypertonic cells will lose water shrivel and die (isotonic there will be no net movement of water across the plasma membrane) 7. 13: hypotonic bathing solution (hypertonic cell solution, water moves into the cell, not good for animal cells, good for plant cells (turgid)
